Mosaic of the Annunciation

Within a mosaic, the artist arranges jagged pieces in varying sizes of broken glass in order to create a beautiful cohesive masterpiece. In the same sense, God orders the joys, sufferings, and mundane moments of our lives to create beauty and Divine purpose. Also, just as a mosaic is best viewed from the vantage point of the artist, God’s plan is often understood in hindsight, or from a faith perspective, as He can clearly see how the tiny and sometimes seemingly insignificant parts of our lives fit perfectly together.

The Mosaic of the Annunciation is a wonderful example of God’s marvelous designs within our lives. Created in the 11th century in 1030 A.D. and housed in Kyiv, Ukraine’s Saint Sophia’s Cathedral, a World UNESCO Heritage site, this gem features the Angel Gabriel visiting the Virgin Mary with the Divine message that she would bear the Christ Child. Situated on the two main pillars of the triumphal arch or large decorated archway spanning the nave, in front of the altar, this mosaic is divided into two segments. The Archangel Gabriel is situated on one pillar and the Virgin Mary is found on the other.

Within this Byzantine jewel, the Constantinopolitan masters, utilized varying colors to symbolize deep Divine and spiritual significance. The background of the Mosaic of the Annunciation is overlaid in gold-leaf glass pieces, also known as tesserae, symbolizing the divine light of the heavenly realm. The golden tesserae are set at differing angles in order to catch light, creating a dynamic shimmering effect distinguishing the figures from the ordinary world.

Mother Mary is clothed in blue and purple hues signifying her role as Mother of God and her heavenly and spiritual purity. The Angel Gabriel is depicted in white garments emphasizing purity, holiness, the Divine message. There are also subtle accents of crimson or red found within the mosaic. The purpose of this color choice is to indicate humanity, and the sacrifice and Royal Nature of Christ. The green earth tone colors are used to portray the ground, contrasting with the divine colors, rooting the mosaic in an earthy yet sanctified space.

The Mosaic of the Annunciation truly highlights the union of the Divine and the earthy through the contrasting color choices of blue and gold representing the heavenly and the green representing the Incarnation of Christ found within the earthy. The Constantinopolitan masters arranged these small, broken, colorful pieces of glass in order to create this beautiful Mosaic of the Annunciation that will continue to touch generations of the faithful to come.

Prayerful Reflection:

Dear Lord, sometimes I feel like a leaf blowing in the wind. I’m uncertain where my life is going or what is my purpose. Today I trust You and place myself within the Palm of Your Hand. I invite You to arrange every aspect of my life into a perfectly imperfect mosaic by your Holy Designs. Thank you for honoring each detail of my life no matter how mundane, joyful, or painful that it is. I trust You, Lord, and I love you, Lord. Amen.

Scripture: Luke 1:26-38
