Botticelli's Annunciation
Mother Mary’s response to the Angel Gabriel’s message to her was a pivotal moment that shaped the course of our humanity. Her willingness to say “Yes” to God and His Divine Plan for salvation history was truly a miracle. Her response to the Angel Gabriel’s Annunciation was “Fiat, may it be done unto me according to your word.” Her “Yes” to God’s Will was in complete reparation and healing of humanity to Eve’s “No” in her rebellion against God by eating of the forbidden fruit. Mother Mary will forever be known as “The New Eve” because she was sinless and chose to follow God in her entirety.
Botticelli beautifully depicted this magnificent moment of the Angel Gabriel informing Mother Mary of her Conception of Jesus, the Son of God, in his painting entitled “The Annunciation”. Botticelli’s Annunciation was completed in 1489 and is a renowned Renaissance tempera panel painting. This ancient durable technique uses pigment bound by egg yolk, applied to rigid, gesso-coated wood panels. The Annunciation painting is currently housed in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery.
Within this awe-inspiring painting, Mother Mary is portrayed in her bedroom, illustrating her deep communion with God. When the Angel Gabriel appears to her, he is holding a white lily signifying purity. The backdrop of this painting contains a grand exterior landscape with radiant colors, which is a nod to Paradise. Botticelli truly captured the raw emotion, dramatic gesturing, and in-depth architectural setting found in the strokes of the painting. This painting embodies the spiritual transformation of Mother Mary, which in turn transformed all of humanity for all of eternity.
Prayerful Reflection:
Mother Mary, thank you so much for your courageous and loving “Yes” towards God. This singular word transformed history for all time. Please lead us, your little children, into our own small “fiats” every day and in every moment. May our faith and love of Jesus deepen within our hearts now and always. Amen.
