Virgin and Child

The Hagia Sophia, which translates to Holy Wisdom, was one of the largest cathedrals built for centuries. Constructed in 537 A.D. in Istanbul Turkey as an Eastern Orthodox Church, it was later converted into a Mosque in 1453. For a time it became a museum and now serves as an active mosque. It is visited by many people of all different faith traditions.

Known for its massive dome, the Hagia Sophia features a combination of mosaics, Christian imagery, and later-added Islamic calligraphy and architecture. One such mosaic unveiling the beauty of the Christian faith was the Virgin and Child located in the Apse of the church, which is semicircular or polygonal recess, often vaulted or domed, typically found at the eastern end of a church, housing the altar and sanctuary. This mosaic was placed in the apse to become a focal point for the faithful.

The Virgin and Child Mosaic, serving as the oldest remaining figural mosaic in the building, was unveiled in 867 AD. It depicts the Theotokos, Mary, the Mother of God, with her hand on the shoulder of the Christ Child. Mother Mary is wearing her dark blue/purple maphorion or cloak, representing her humanity and role as Mother of God, and her imperial status as Queen of Heaven. Although in this mosaic, Jesus is a child, He is depicted with mature features-blessing with one hand and holding a scroll in the other hand, showcasing the Incarnation.

This mosaic has deep significance in that it celebrates the triumph of Orthodoxy over Iconoclasm, which reintroduced sacred images to the faithful. At one time in order to engrave a more Muslim identity upon the mosque, this image was covered permanently, however, it now remains visible for all to witness its beauty and depth. A white veil is temporarily placed over the mosaic during prayer times at the mosque, but is otherwise left uncovered. This image draws the faithful deeper into the Mystery of the Incarnation and Mother Mary’s role in Salvation History.

Prayerful Reflection:

In the lighting of this candle, may Mother Mary lead us to the Heart of Her Son. As she guided Jesus, as he grew and matured in years, may she guide us to grow and mature in our faith. May the fire of God‘s love burning in this candle burn within our hearts. Amen.
