Constantinople

Constantinople was founded in 324 and consecrated in 330 by Constantine the Great. It became the capital of the eastern Roman empire for over 1000 years. Serving as an cultural gateway between the East and West, it boasted the Hagia Sophia, the Imperial Library and Theodosian walls. In 1453, it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire and remains the capital of Turkey, under the name of Istanbul.
