The Story of Pallas

Pallas is the young son of Evander, king of the Arcadians and an ally of Aeneas. When Aeneas prepares to return to battle, Evander entrusts his son to the Trojan hero so that Pallas may learn the arts of leadership and war beneath his instruction.

In Book X of the Aeneid, Pallas confronts Turnus, the formidable prince leading the resistance against Aeneas. Pallas fights courageously but is killed by Turnus, who removes the young warrior’s ornate sword-belt and claims it as a trophy.

The act proves fatal. At the conclusion of the epic, Aeneas defeats Turnus and initially hesitates to kill him. He then sees Pallas’s sword-belt upon Turnus’s shoulder. Confronted with the visible reminder of the young man entrusted to his care, Aeneas strikes the final blow.

Pallas’s death therefore reaches far beyond a single battlefield encounter.
