The Good Samaritan - Biblical Candle

The Good Samaritan candle draws upon one of Christ’s most recognizable and demanding parables: the account of a traveler who interrupts his own journey to care for a wounded stranger.

Inspired by the Gospel of Luke and illustrated with imagery from a Vatican postage stamp, this candle offers a visible reminder that mercy is more than sympathy. It requires attention, personal involvement, and a willingness to bear the cost of another person’s need.

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

The parable appears in Luke 10:25–37. A scholar of the law asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. Together they recall the commandments to love God completely and to love one’s neighbor as oneself.

The scholar then asks a more difficult question: “And who is my neighbor?”

Jesus answers by describing a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho. Robbers attack him, strip him, beat him, and leave him half dead beside the road. A priest sees the wounded man and passes by. A Levite does the same.

A Samaritan then approaches.

The choice would have been striking to Christ’s original audience. Jews and Samaritans were separated by longstanding religious and social hostility. Nevertheless, it is the Samaritan—not the respected religious figures—who allows himself to be moved by the wounded man’s suffering.

He approaches the man, treats his wounds with oil and wine, places him upon his own animal, carries him to an inn, and pays for his continued care. He does not merely feel compassion. He rearranges his journey, uses his possessions, accepts inconvenience, and makes himself responsible for a stranger’s recovery.

Who Is My Neighbor?

At the conclusion of the parable, Jesus does not ask which people qualify as neighbors. He asks which traveler proved himself to be a neighbor to the wounded man.

The answer is: “The one who treated him with mercy.”

Christ then commands, “Go and do likewise.”

The parable therefore turns the original question outward. Rather than determining the limits of our obligation, it asks whether we are willing to cross the road, draw near to suffering, and become a neighbor through concrete acts of mercy.

Christian interpreters have also found a deeper image of salvation within the story. The wounded traveler has been understood as fallen humanity and the Samaritan as Christ, who approaches mankind in its helplessness, tends its wounds, and carries it to safety. This spiritual interpretation complements the parable’s direct moral demand: the mercy we have received must become mercy offered to others.

The candle’s design incorporates a Vatican postage stamp depicting the Good Samaritan. Its Latin inscription, Samaritanus misericordia motus est, is drawn from Luke 10:33 and means:

“The Samaritan was moved with compassion.”

The inscription identifies the decisive moment in the parable. Before the Samaritan acts, he first permits himself to see the wounded man and to be affected by his suffering. Compassion becomes the beginning of responsibility.
